What to expect from MRI scan

MRI or Magnetic resonance imaging is a radiology technique used to see different images of the body parts by the use of radio waves, strong magnetic gradient fields, and computers. MRI is used to learn different organs like brain, spine, torn ligaments, stroke, dementia, abdomen, chest, injuries, developmental disabilities, and a lot more.

MRI gives a clear cut picture of the organ in question thereby finding out the present state and thereby Doctors can suggest the proposed line of treatment for the disease. MRI is taken into consideration when an X-ray or CT scan does not give enough evidence to the doctor to identify the health hazard.

How an MRI is done?

The process is done through an MRI machine that is fitted with a large magnet at one end, which is the scanner, with a bed that slides inside the scanner. The scanner creates a strong magnetic field that aligns the protons of hydrogen atoms that are made to expose on a ray of radio waves. This process in turn spins the protons of the body which produces a signal that is read by the receiver of the scanner. Later the computer processes the information into an image that gives specific details of the organ being studied. The images obtained are usually detailed and at times contrast agents like gadolinium are also used to improve the effectiveness.

The patient is inserted inside the scanner with either foot or head first as per the organ to be imaged. The machine is operated by a radiographer. The usually painless procedure of MRI takes about 15 mins to an hour and at times to 90 mins wherein all the organs are captured from different angles.

Advantages of MRI scan

  • Precise identification of the disease. MRI can discriminate tissues based on their biochemical and physical properties. These minute details help is choosing the right line of treatment and thus a faster cure.
  • Since the procedure is non-invasive thus no harmful rays like X-ray enter the body.
  • Different angular view of the organs.
  • A full view of the different body parts showing all the organs which are affected by the disease.

MRI and CT scan

Usually, doctors order MRI and CT scans to see the exact condition of the several internal body parts without surgery like the bones, joints, brain, abdomen, etc. Both of them produce images through the use of different techniques. MRI uses magnetic fields whereas CT scan uses X-ray and is thus less expensive than MRI. In both, the procedures body images are captured from different angles and they all are safe procedures. The MRI is noisy whereas the CT scan is quiet.

We find MRI scan centers all around India and we are blessed to have some of the best MRI labs in Gurgaon. There are more than 200 MRI labs in Gurgaon that conduct tests as directed by the doctor and give reports within a week or two depending on the criticality of the organ diagnosed. The expenses are affordable and start from approximately Rs 1500 though it depends on the MRI given and lab chosen. However, looking at the benefits of  MRI help the doctors to choose the right treatment for their patients.
